The Will to Adorn at #UIC

The African-American Cultural Center at UIC invites UIC campus and community partners to participate in our Brown Bag Series

The Will to Adorn

During the summer of 2013, AACC student staffer Brittney Hopgood and God’s Gang Director Carolyn Thomas participated in The Will to Adorn: African-American Diversity, Style and Identity; one of three programs featured in the 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival on the national mall in Washington DC. The Will to Adorn showcased the distinctive ways in which diverse African American identities are expressed through attire and adornment. The festival program was an outgrowth of a larger Smithsonian Youth Access research initiative, which enables Smithsonian educators to work with community hosts and organizations that serve underserved and adjudicated youth.
