LaMar R. Gayles Jr. is a second-year student in UIC’s Museum Studies (MUSE) program. He focuses on interpretative curation, and the technical and material studies of art objects and craft traditions in the Black Diaspora. Specifically, he plans to study Black representation in the School of Art and Art History from the 20th century to the present. LaMar holds a Cum Laude BA from St. Olaf College with a triple major in Art History, Ethnic Studies, and Ethno-Aesthetic & Archaeological Materiality. He has curatorial experience at various institutions in Minnesota and Florida, and at Chicago’s South Side Community Art Center. In addition to his MUSE research, he is currently at work on a book on Black American Jewelry. LaMar is a “Native Son” of Chicago and currently lives in Woodlawn.
