Wellness at the African-American Cultural Center
This year the African-American Cultural Center will explore the ways that African Americans have historically defined and developed well-being, and explore and cultivate our own wellness practices. Through a series of conversations, lectures, yoga and meditation classes we will together navigate a path to wellness.
What is “wellness”? According to the National Wellness Institute, wellness is “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence.” In other words, wellness is the conscious development of habits that support emotional, social, physical, intellectual and environmental well-being…”
“…For African-Americans, these dimensions of wellness are both immediately urgent and deeply historical, and can be broadened to address the economic and political obstacles that undermine individual safety and achievement, and compromise community.”
